Madaba

Ancient Madaba is the only Christian city in Jordan. The city is located in the northwestern part of the country, near the capital. The history of this city dates back several thousand years; references to Madaba can be found in the Bible. In fact, in 746, the city was ruined by an earthquake. It was only at the end of the 19th century that it was excavated and restored from ruins. Later, the ruins of the Church of Saint George were discovered. On its floor, it was found the unique mosaic map depicting the territory of the Holy Land, made in the VI century A.D. However, only a quarter of the original document could be saved. Today, Madaba is full of cultural attractions and religious shrines, which are visited by people from different parts of the globe. Moreover, Madaba includes a unique mosaic school where you can learn how to create mosaic works or restore them.
